FALLS CHURCH, Va.—The main conference room at JDG Communications usually hosts clients for business meetings, PowerPoint presentations, and JDG team celebrations.

With Halloween just around the corner, the oft business-like environment was transformed into a butchery of sorts as JDG employees carved and gutted pumpkins on the newspaper-covered conference table late Friday.

The rainy afternoon served as a perfect excuse for the JDG team to redirect their creative focus and energy to the age-old tradition of pumpkin carving.

This year's pumpkin carving party, an occasion that's hardly billable but highly enjoyable, allowed the JDG team to "practice what they preach" regarding the importance of good design and strong branding. Graphic designer Kristen Johnson used the activity to flawlessly carve an exact likeness of the company's logo.

Leila Rao, manager of JDG's General Services Administration (GSA) account, pointed out the broader value of the festive day. "At JDG we work hard for our clients but can play hard too. Allowing for fun activities like this speaks volumes on employee satisfaction, and that can't be factored into a standard salary and benefits equation."

The day's activities culminated in a ceremonial end-of-the-day pumpkin lighting. Although there was no formal competition, the entire staff discussed at length their favorites while munching on toasted pumpkin seeds gathered straight from the gutted orange rounds themselves.

This year's unofficial, but unanimous, "Best in Pumpkin" award went to Director of Technology Jim McIntyre for his nearly flawless rendering of a crossword puzzle.

The pumpkins will remain on display until November 1 at the Falls Church office, at which time JDG staff will return to business as usual—or simply to less messy ways of demonstrating their core principles.
